Foreword: A Civil Rights Symposium Honoring Judge John Minor Wisdom

Foreword by Jack Greenberg

Among the pleasures of being a lawyer is the experience of appearing before a judge who is bright, alert, worldly, and just. Answering questions, posing issues, marshaling facts, and offering legal propositions before a judge who informs the presentation with a coherent legal philosophy, that is what makes it fun to be a lawyer. When one finds the rare judge who is not only active, bright, intellectually involved, and just, but who also combines with those qualities a joie de vivre and a sense of bonhomie, then one has discovered the highest embodiment of the judicial being.

There are a rare few of this sort. There are, of course, just judges, and there are judges who enjoy and exude life. However, as one might expect, it is in New Orleans that one finds a just judge who at the same time loves good food, good wine, and good music. Certainly, this describes Judge John Minor Wisdom.
