Essay by Susan H. Williams
A great deal of attention in the last five years or so has focused on feminist critiques of free speech law. These arguments have centered primarily on issues like pornography, sexual harassment, and hate speech, in which the application of the legal doctrine to women's concerns is obvious and direct. Although I believe that these debates are extremely important and I will address some of these issues at the end of this essay, my emphasis here will be on the connections between feminist theory and free speech theory at a more general level.
