Against the background of this especially vivid example of the influence of the Louisiana Civil Code upon codifications in Latin America, we should ask for an explanation of this influence. Indeed, we have two questions. First, from a practical standpoint, how did the drafters of the Latin American codes obtain knowledge of the Louisiana Civil Code? Second, why did the drafters think it would be helpful or appropriate to evaluate the Louisiana Civil Code for their work? For specific insights, we will look at the three most important codifications in South America: the civil codes of Chile, Brazil, and Argentina.
